Sleep Apnea, Obesity, and Snoring

Obese people are at high risk for a condition known as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), in which the airway becomes partially blocked during sleep. The thicker your neck, the more likely you are to suffer from OSA. People with OSA tend to snore heavily, followed by periods of not breathing at all, known as apnea, and experience frequent awakenings during the night. The quality of sleep suffers tremendously. It is estimated that at least 2 percent of women and 4 percent of men over 50 suffer from OSA, but many experts suspect that number is even higher.

People with OSA tend to suffer from overwhelming fatigue during the day and, consequently, fall into a dangerous and vicious cycle of overeating and inactivity. OSA is associated with high blood pressure, elevated pressures in the lungs, weakening of the heart muscle, abnormal heart rhythms, and even heart attacks and strokes.

Fortunately, OSA is easy to diagnose with an overnight sleep study and can usually be effectively treated with a special mask that is worn at night. If the mask is not tolerable, dental devices are a second option. In severe cases, surgery may be required. Often, once OSA is controlled, weight loss and exercise become much easier.
